GEOGRAPHY COMES ALIVE! This engaging interdisciplinary project and unit of diverse activities (social studies, geography, math, language arts, art, history, computer library, math) is one of my all-time favorite units I have created (for 4th-12th grades) because it involves hands-on, experiential learning, multimedia, writing, research, art in a fun way while the students can make many choices as they become their own travel agent. The interaction and comparing of students regarding their projects is an important part of the project.
In becoming his/her own travel agent (individual or with a partner), students select 25 special sites in the USA they wish to visit, research them write up a descriptive note card for each, create a USA map and plot their selections. Supplemental activities involve the computer lab, library and math.
I am amazed how creative the students are in creating maps and finding unique and bizarre travel destinations. I always have learned a lot about the US with their selections as do they.
The bonus is that they are learning a lot of writing, reading. research and organizational skills without realizing it.
I currently writing an activity film guide for teachers on how to teach feature films
