This resource includes three biographical informational texts about world explorer Ferdinand Magellan as well as two pages of student work pages for each text (for a total of 6 work pages). A full answer key is included.
Each passage is accompanied by an “Understanding the Text” page and a “Using Language” page. These activities give the students a chance to demonstrate their understanding of what they have read, using vocabulary, making inferences and evaluating historical content, and expressing themselves through writing.
The three passages in this unit are:
(1) The World of Ferdinand Magellan;
(2) Magellan’s Plan; and
(3) Magellan’s Accomplishments.
The passages examine the times Magellan lived in and his position in society, his ambition to find a western route to Asia and how he succeeded, and his legacy. Each text is about 440 words in length.
The unit is designed primarily for Social Studies students in grades 4-7 (for strong grade 4s!) but could be used for informational text study in ELA. While the passages are continuous, each of the 3 texts can be used one at a time and assigned as the teacher wishes: in class over 1-3 days, as homework assignments, as independent projects, etc.
All passages are original (created by me) as are the activities. A full answer key is provided.
