Canadian history or general exploration - this resource includes three original reading passages about the life of explorer John Cabot. Each text has an “Understanding the Text” page and a “Using Language” page. These activities give the students a chance to demonstrate their understanding of what they have read, using vocabulary, making inferences and evaluating historical content, and expressing themselves through writing.
The three passages are: Man of Mystery, Cabot's First Voyage, and What Happened to Cabot? They cover Cabot’s early life, his accomplishments as an explorer, and his mysterious end (and recent challenges to the long held theory that he died on his third voyage).
The unit is designed primarily for Social Studies students in grades 4-6 but could be used for informational text study in ELA. While the passages are continuous, each of the 3 texts can be used alone and assigned as the teacher wishes: in class over 1-3 days, as homework assignments, as independent projects, etc.
All passages are original (created by me) as are the activities. A full answer key is provided. Please follow my store for updates on future products!
