Explorers Interactive Dice Game to Teach Obstacles and Accomplishments

A very fun interactive game where students pretend to be either Coronado, de Champlain, la Salle, or Cabot. Flags from each country (plus the New World) are hung in corners of the room and dice are placed in each country.

Students roll the die which state accomplishments and obstacles for each explorer. For example, you may roll "Establish trading posts in the New World. +5 Gold Pieces" or "Used an inaccurate map and are lost. Stay in France. -3 Gold Pieces". Students then move to the "New World" and roll that dice or stay in their country and roll again.

Included in this packet are:

*Standards covered/Teacher background info
*Graphic organizers for students' notebooks
*Game sheet for students' notebooks--used to record their rolls and amount of gold during the games
*Flags to hang in corners of the room
*Explorer cards
*Dice cards and paper dice

Note that this activity does take a little prep work like hanging flags around the room, cutting out explorer cards and taping dice cards onto wooden dice. Directions and instructional ideas are included for each step of the activity.

My students have loved the interactive nature of this game, and it really helps simulate what it was like for explorers during this time.

Roll ‘em!
