Explorer’s Journal Booklet is a cross-curricular, engaging student activity that pairs perfectly with any explorer unit. This is a fun, creative way for students to show their science and social studies knowledge. Students will brainstorm what it would be like to discover a new island on planet Earth. Students will create an ecosystem, including plants, animals, landscapes, and weather, as they record their findings in the booklet. Additionally, students will create inhabitants of the island as they describe homes, hunting, traditions, and the use of natural resources.
If time permits, I like to have students put their booklets under the doc cam and report their findings to the “King” and “Queen” and the people of their native land. Have dress up items available for the explorer and the royalty to wear as they are reporting on the newly found island. This activity allows for further discussion about explorers, ecosystems, and indigenous people.
Materials and Prep:
The booklet is easy to use and requires very minimal prep. Print the pages double sided and put the inside page under the cover page. Fold in half and staple.
