This nine-week unit is based on the 9-10 ELA Common Core standard that says to "Analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific work (e.g., how Shakespeare treats a theme or topic from Ovid or the Bible or how a later author draws on a play by Shakespeare)."
Therefore, this is an Alice in Wonderland unit that begins with reading both of Lewis Carroll's novels and exploring irony, symbolism, and theme. Once students have read both novels, they will watch Disney's live-action Alice in Wonderland movie and play American McGee's Alice Madness Returns while tracking their chosen symbols, ironies, and themes. This unit culminates with a compare/contrast research paper.
Primary sources have not been included due to copyright issues. Activities, worksheets, rubrics, basic timelines, and answer keys have been included.
