I have used this lesson with 6th, 7th and 8th graders VERY successfully.
The work packets are pretty self explanatory.
This resource includes two work packets. The first packet is used with student pairs. Both students with be BOTH the manufacturer and the customer. Remind students that they will play both roles.
Additionally... They may only communicate in WRITING :)
Tell the students they will design a product for a client. The product can be whatever you decide. I chose a wallet.
The students will follow the directions in the work packet exactly and you can tweak the amount of time you allow for completion of each section depending on your students.
Use the Reflection questions to further discuss the process as a class.
Once students have completed that work packet you may continue the process by using the second work packet where students will actually create their best locker ever, after having planned it.
For this, you will need a variety of items:
Each student will need a shoebox
I provided, extra cardboard pieces, construction paper, tape, pipecleaners, random pieces of fabric ... be creative. But don't show your students what you have for them to work with until they have completed the designing stage :)
Students will brainstorm on paper for their own product. They will then create the product using the materials you have provided. Finally, they will right exactdirections on how to make their product so others can replicate it and show off their perfect lockers by presenting them to the class and explaining unique features.
