This product gives you a means of communicating nonverbally with children with the debilitating disorder of selective mutism. It's also a great activity for exploring feelings about speaking with ANY child or group of children with communication disorders of all kinds. This process of opening up about the feelings surrounding a speech disorder is an important step in the therapy process.
I made this product for my own use with a child with selective mutism. Then I discoverd that it was helpful with ALL of my students! My products are always used in my own therapy room before I offer them to you.
This product includes:
~ 2 sorting mats (“yes, I agree” and “no, I do not agree”)
~ 70 cards with statements about communication. The child (or children) can choose a card, read it (or you can read it to them) and sort it according to how they feel about it - AGREE or DISAGREE.
I like to take part in the sorting, too, to show the child that everyone big and small has strong, personal feelings about communication.
~Information about selective mutism and ideas for treatment
For children with selective mutism, this activity helps the child to communicate their feelings about talking...without having to speak. Going through this important process can help you discover the root of the mutism and identify situations that may facilitate or hinder speaking. In fact, this can be an eye-opening activity to use with any child with any kind of speech disorder. Hopefully, this will help you establish goals for the child and learn what activities or in what situations the student would be most likely to speak. Other ideas for therapy with children with selective mutism are included in the download.
Easy prep includes:
