Product Description

Fall is here and the leaves are changing colors. Your kids are talking about the bright yellows, oranges, and reds. You’re probably even making fun fall crafts with all the different colored leaves. But do you know why the leaves are different colors? Or how they change over time? Or why? In this lesson, we’ll learn about the changing colors of fall and we’ll do an activity to help your children see the pigments in their favorite fall leaves!

This lesson comes with a video that will walk you through the process step-by-step, so there's no guessing! Plus, the science behind pigmentation is clearly explained in a single page!

Learning Objectives:

  • RECOGNIZE that leaves are green in the spring and summer but change color in the fall.
  • EXPLAIN that there are pigments in the leaf’s cells that make them appear to be different colors.
  • IMPLEMENT the leaf chromatography activity.
  • CATEGORIZE the different chromatographs by color pigments.
  • HYPOTHESIZE what would happen if you did something different in your procedure like added more leaves or let them sit in the solution for a longer period of time.
  • CREATE a piece of art with your chromatographs!

All lessons include:

  • learning objectives for each age group
  • nature activity with a list of supplies and instructions
  • an explanation of the science
  • nature journaling worksheets
