Students will create their own experiment to determine if an object is living or non-living. Students will work in groups of 2 or 3. Each group will get a box containing an unidentified object. I try to choose a few objects that will stump the students. Some of the items I use are: a rock with lichens, tree bark, moss growing on tree bark, a raw egg, celery, plastic plants, an odd looking mushroom, a sample of pond water, an orange with mold growing on it, a bag of yeast, onion skin. Anything you can think of that will make the students think can work here.
