This lesson provides students with an excellent introduction to the basic tools of the metric system; scale (mass), ruler (distance), and graduated cylinders (volume). Students will learn tips for using the tools correctly and the opportunity for hands-on learning with the tools. Included in the lesson is a basic lab activity exploring the tools as well as worksheets for learning to identify what is being measured based on the units given.

In this lesson students will:

*gain a basic understanding of how to read units (i.e. what the base words liter, meter, and gram stand for)

*get tips on how to successfully use metric tools such as the importance of a meniscus

* explain what tools to use in a given situation

*have the opportunity to use tools accurately during a mini-lab
