Get your kids outside exploring nature! No matter where you go you will find things to examine. I like to start off with a worksheet of things that I am hoping to find with my students: flower, acorn, leaf, bird, spider, insect (worksheet included). As we find these things, we circle them on our worksheet. I included a blank worksheet that can be filled in with things that you know you can find outside your classroom.
Also included in this packet are 6 nature sort mats where your students can classify their finds: “leaves”, “insects”, “spiders”, “mushrooms”, “seeds” & “everything else”. You can put real items on the sorting mats and/or you can have your students sort the 36 cards that are in this packet. Each card depicts something in nature that can be sorted on the mats. 6 cards per mat.
Have your students find 6 leaves on their nature hunt and then create a mini-6 page leaf booklet (color and BandW versions included). If you live in an area where there are no leaves – I’ve included photos of 6 different leaves: maple, gingko, oak, sassafras, sweet gum, and tulip tree.
I do this every year with my pre-K and K students and they love going outdoors on nature hunts! Have fun encouraging your little ones to explore the world around them!
