Now more than ever, students need to be critical consumers and producers of non-fiction texts. These activities are designed to introduce high school students to non-fiction. This would be a great addition to any AP Language or Rhetoric course, but can also be adapted for use in any high school English class.
This packet includes:
* A discussion activity geared towards students exploring the value of non-fiction texts in context to fiction. It includes links to readings for the students.
* An analysis activity to help students look at tone, purpose, and audience as it pertains to news media.
* 2 activities based on Joan Didion's "On Keeping a Notebook" in which students analyze her style, and create a piece of creative non-fiction over their own lives. (I would recommend reading other samples of creative non-fiction with students as well, although this is a good place to start!)
