This unit was written to help introduce science to primary children and to motivate and inspire children to love science. The Next Generation Science Standards have been written and are being implemented in 26 states (as of June 2013). The 2013-2014 school year will allow states to implement these standards and then provide feedback to revise the current document. Whether the standards remain the same or are modified, I see the most important take away from the document being the idea of how children explore science with a more hands on, analytical process, and a more critical thinking type approach. This matches what the Common Core State standards are trying to accomplish. So this unit was created to encourage critical thinking, develop an awareness and understanding of science, and to introduce concepts that are a part of current Science curriculums and will be a part of future Science curriculums, a kind of mix between old and new. The main purpose of this unit is to introduce science and to motivate learners to learn through informational text and critical thinking through Science.
This unit contains:
An introduction to science and scientists
An integration of the content areas in The Common Core’s Information Text
An integration of technology: Using search engines (Kidrex- Google for kids), Pinterest in the classroom, and a Learning Management System- Schoology for collaboration and shared thinking
An introduction to the Next Generation Science Standards with a focus Science, Engineering, and Technology practices
Further development of asking and answering questions
Motivation and inspiration in science
I hope you enjoy this peak into the adventures of science!
