This product contains a student handout and answer key to guide the exploration. In addition, patterns for Mega Bloks, Duplos, and Legos are included in color and in black and white to save toner. Most of the patterns have an open bottom. A version of the Duplo sized template that encloses completely (p. 11) has been included.
Copy page 3 for each student. Assign students to groups of 3 – 4 and give each group a Mega Block and Duplo sheet, scissors, rulers, and glue or tape.
It’s also helpful if you have one of each type of block to let students measure, feel, and visualize. I bring one Mega Blok (because I only have one 2x4 brick in that size), eight Duplos, and 64 Legos to class to divide among and pass around to groups.
If your students can multitask, The LEGO® Story is available at https://youtu.be/NdDU_BBJW9Y. It’s an animated 17 minutes long video that explains the origins of the LEGO Group. It describes the persistence despite setbacks and insistence on quality that made the company successful. You could show the video while they are cutting and assembling their models.
Once they finish the exploration, have your students practice what they’ve learned by giving each a copy of page 12.
