This unit contains ways for students to explore themes of a story or poem. The goal is to develop how the theme is woven throughout and how the character's actions affect the events of the story or poem. The unit uses 2 fables and 2 poems, each with their own unique themes/morals and character actions.
As students read the fables and poems they should be able to identify what the themes are, what where the character's actions and how the character's actions affect the outcome of the story. To add rigor to the lessons, I have students rewrite the fables and poems by changing the character's actions and having them examine how that would change the outcome of the story or how it would change the theme of the poem.
