2 sets of notes (can be a two day or one day activity depending on the skill level of your students)
1st day - graph sort and equation sort; students cut out and sort graphs into three groups (linear, exponential and other) and then cut out and sort equations into three groups (linear, exponential and other). they will paste the pictures into two respective groups, and then summarize their findings. On page two are 9 examples to test their skills.
2nd day - students develop the idea of using a table of values to find a pattern and thus determine if the function is linear or exponential. (This is a quick set of notes).
I used this set of notes over 2 days with my Alg. 1 ESL students this year. They loved the interactive cut/paste aspect of the work, and liked being detectives to find the pattern with the table of values.
