Description

In recent years there has been a huge shift away from rote memorization of math facts and toward a strategy-based approach for learning math facts. There's a big difference between memorizing and understanding. The activities in this unit focus on learning doubles.

Includes:

• Mini lesson for introducing doubles and creating an anchor chart
• Two board games with instructions and recording sheets--one for doubles and one for halves
• Flash cards with ten-frame representation on one side and the fact on the other
• Two sets of dominoes--one with just numerals and one with a mix of pictorial and numerals
• Fact family workstation with mat, cards, and recording sheet

Common Core Alignment
1.OA.3--Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract
1.OA.4--Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem
2.OA.2--Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies; by the end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers
