Product Description
George Orwell’s book 1984 is required reading within most English curriculums, yet how many of us can truly make the connections Orwell was trying to warn us about when he published this back in 1949? I would contend that despite that fact that Orwell’s infamous year of Big Brother-1984, has come and gone, his warnings of totalitarian rule, brainwashed populations, complete government surveillance of all its citizens and life, and the power of propaganda are more true today than they ever have been. Finally you can have a series of thought provoking lessons and presentations that will help you project the main themes and ideas of 1984 to your students in an entertaining, stimulating, and sometimes outright chilling way. A recent survey on the teaching of 1984 revealed that most teachers not only limp through the concepts and themes, but have more difficulty getting students to relate to the book than any other they teach throughout the year. This may have been true in the past, but now you can have the success that I (Dean Fuerst) have had over the past six years getting my students to understand and relate to the novel. My students have consistently relayed to me that these lessons dealing with the books important themes of government control, loss of individual rights and freedoms, propaganda, and the role of leadership and personal responsibility were some of their favorites, and most important lessons they have ever learned. This PowerPoint is filled with video clips, documents, writing prompts and group work, journal topics, and thought provoking concepts that will bring to life the Orwellian world of 1984 and Big Brother. I have detailed lesson ideas, additional information and links, and teacher suggestions throughout the 53 slide PP lessons, and I know that you, too, will have the kind of success that I have had getting students involved in Orwell’s world that at times today no longer seems fictional…
