This PowerPoint presentation is a game that will reinforce and provide practice for the previously taught skill of finding powers of a number when given the base and the exponent. The game begins with a detailed description of how students should make their own Bingo cards. This one slide has the steps presented one at a time. Each time you click the mouse or hit Enter, the next step becomes visible. When the students have drawn their own Bingo card on their paper, the game advances to the next slide where they are walked through the process of filling in the card. Again the slide is revealed click-by-click until each student has made his own individual unique card.
The game then proceeds to the next slide where the game actually begins. A problem is presented such as 5 to the third power. The teacher pauses to allow students to work out the answer using either paper and pencil or calculators, then find the answer on their card and X it out. On the next mouse click, the next power problem is revealed and the process repeated. Play is continued in this manner with each mouse click revealing a new problem, until a student has 4 X's in a row and announces BINGO! After their card is checked, play may proceed until 2 or 3 students have won.
The last slide in the presentation consists of 4 coupon certificates that may be photocopied and used as rewards for the winners. Also included is a follow up game that involves more difficult computations.
Although the presentation is only 9 slides long, it will take as much as 45 minutes depending on students' familiarity with the game and their ability levels. Each step on most of the slides is revealed one at a time on the mouse-click, and time must be allowed for students' computations.
I think both you and your students will enjoy this learning game.
