PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This exponent Tarsia puzzle is a great way for your students to practice calculating the standard notation of numbers given in exponential notation.

My students love them! They ask me to make Tarsia puzzles for just about every concept we study, seriously! They are great as a math center, quiz/test review, part of a Friday game day, etc. So much better than a worksheet! More fun than Task Cards or "I Have Who Has"! The students' enthusiasm is so rewarding, and I scored high marks on an observation with this in my bag of tricks!

Tarsia puzzles work like this:

* You print them out and cut out the individual shapes (or have a couple helpful students cut them out)!
* Partners (I use groups of 2-3 students) work to calculate the standard notation for a number given in exponential notation and find the side of another shape that has that answer.
* The two sides are put together and they start work on another.

* Best printed on card stock.
* You could print out each set of a separate color card stock in case a piece gets misplaced. (This has never happened to me since students are scattered throughout the room and I have to check the puzzle before they clean up.)

Why is called a Tarsia puzzle? Tarsia was once a town in Southern Italy where inlaid wood floors (called intarsia floors after the town) were perfected by local craftsmen.
