Exponential Challenge is a higher order thinking activity that requires students to create problems that illustrate exponent rules for powers with like bases.
The properties required, include: multiplication, division, and power to a power. The challenge includes negative exponents.
In my classroom, the students completed this activities in pairs. It took about 40 minutes to complete the activity. A sample rubric is provided that illustrates a way to grade this challenge.
- Group students into collaborative pairs by ability.
- To assist in differentiating, 2 different levels of this activity are provided. Version B is more challenging than version A.
- Students work to create 3 different expressions that will evaluate to the same given answer.
- Evaluate the activity using the suggested rubric. 2 Challenge questions are included for students to earn bonus points.
