Students often have difficulty distinguishing between a positive and a negative base in an exponential expression.
This activity provides very focused practice on this particular skill. I use it as a partner activity to help students learn to tell the difference between the two situations. I have found that this activity helps students in understanding the concept and developing confidence. Nine problems are included with the last four requiring students to practice substitution.
This is great combined with these other exponent activities:
- I have ... Who has? Exponent Rules
- Exponent Card Sort
- Exponent Extravaganza! Bundle
- Exponent Explosion
- Exponents in Algebra Color by Number
- Exponents Instructional PowerPoint
