This is a double-sided document intended to have the students discover the product rule instead of being told what it is. The only prerequisite knowledge that a student needs to know is what x to a power means. Then the teacher can do one example and let the students explore each question.
The worksheet contains 6 examples where the student expands the power and then rewrites their answer using a base and an exponent. Hopefully by the end they realize that the answer could just be obtained by adding the exponents. I give them time to work each problem and then think and analyze their results to see if they can come up with the rule or see a pattern. There is a space at the bottom to write in the rule. Negative exponents are not explored here. The back provides 6 more examples for guided in-class practice to apply the new rule. Key included.
