“Math Up” is a fun way for students to review the meaning of mathematics vocabulary words! In my classroom, I have used this activity to activate background knowledge at the beginning of the lesson or review content learned at the end of a lesson. Regardless of when it is used, my students love it!

In short, students place a card from the deck on their forehead and rely on descriptions given to them by their peers in order to correctly determine what mathematical term is on the card they have randomly drawn. This game is a great way for students to work with one another and practice communicating mathematically!

Included in this free download are 10 vocabulary cards (which can be printed on 2” x 4” shipping labels and then put on index cards – time saver!), 2 student activity sheets (great for differentiation), step-by-step directions, and an answer key!

The vocabulary words in this activity are: base, expanded form, exponential form, expression, factors, perfect cube, perfect square, power, product, and quotient.

In my classroom, we played this game before completing the Exploring Laws of Exponents activity! It was a great way to activate student prior knowledge and get everyone in the room on the same page before learning the exponent rules.
