This is a comprehensive expository research and writing unit in which students were to identify and research a notable figure with whom they would trade places. The unit includes all definitions and sentences stems for each element of an essay and paragraph. The unit is broken down into several sections of the the writing process in order to allow students to brainstorm and outline, draft, peer review, review and edit. The unit includes a sample essay and exemplar paragraphs for student reference. The unit also includes definitions and examples of various sentence structures (compound, complex sentences, etc) and common coordinating conjunctions to be used as a reference. Further, the unit includes a peer review and self-checklist. The length in time varies with students, but it took about 1.5 months to get through everything, including their final presentations. The reason is that we only focused on one paragraph a day and the next day we did self checklists and peer review. Every student was on their own pace, so you have to have a system for tracking students and having stations where students sit for work time, self-checklist, and peer review.
