Get your high school students motivated and ready to write by letting them be responsible for selecting “what” they write about, while still keeping the “how” (a.k.a. the process) within your control. Students will enjoy selecting a movie of their choice to view and critique. This writing assignment, however, takes students beyond the usual mundane movie review—much like that of a book report—and forces them to open their eyes to the persuasive messages all around us, especially those in the media and entertainment industry. This writing assignment works well in any secondary English/Language Arts class, journalism class, or communications class. It could also work as a pre-assessment or post-assessment for a unit on expository writing.
