Students write an expository essay with the prompt: Explain how people from all different backgrounds can be successful despite societal challenges that life presents them. Support your response with information from all sources. You must write at least two complete body paragraphs.
This essay is a culmination of four different readings of fiction and non-fiction nature that have similar themes regarding overcoming povery, how others views can affect a person, and how to achieve despite gang violence having a negative impact on those closest to someone. This is a tough assignment, but very motivating.
In order to prepare for this essay, students first did all of the following:

This has been a long, involved assignment, but it is engaging and my students love it!
