Students complete this activity as a pre-research activity. Before they decide on a topic, they write down five topics that they would like to explore. Then they write down three questions that they have about each topic. The goal of the activity is to search for answers to those questions. Those questions that are too easy (yes or no answers) or too hard (not enough information or none at all) to find, they revise or cross off. They do this until they are down to the final topic with which they are able to find sustainable answers to all three questions to. This becomes their research topic and the three questions get turned into three statements, which become their three sub-topics in a 5-paragraph essay.
