Reading logs can be more than lists of books read. They can be systems to support students as they apply new learning. They can serve as a focal point for conferring. And logs can also assist students in reflecting on their progress as readers. This approach calls for a variety of logs that are specifically geared to the lesson objections and genres. These logs can be placed in the Word Study section of a students Reader's Notebook.

This collection of logs is geared toward expository or informational text. Gradually progressing in difficulty, the logs guide students in the strategies they can apply the reading informational text. Each form is followed with a page of Teacher Hints. These are ideas for your consideration, guidance in using the logs and some of my thoughts regarding the particular focus point.

Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.
Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take.
Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole.
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grades 6–8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, or section fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the ideas.
