Students need to learn to write informative/explanatory texts that explain complex ideas. However, it can sometimes be hard for them to come up with topics, especially ones that they find engaging. This assignment is one that they will, hopefully, find interesting as it asks them to reflect on their life and learning and on the major influences in their lives. It also asks them to think about who they want to be and what they have to do to get there. The hope is that the end result of this reflection will be an essay that has an authentic and engaging voice, one that the student will find interesting to write and you will find enjoyable to read.

In this file you will find several graphic organizers that students can use for the pre-writing stage. They will reflect on several areas of their life and learning in order to develop their ideas. There are graphic organizers that they can use to get more focused before they write a first draft, an outline to use to get it organized and a handout to help them with the revision process. You will also find an editable rubric and instructions page.

NOTE: this is not a how-to for writing an expository essay. It's expected that students will already have the background they need to write this assignment.
