This will help take the guess work out of, "How do I teach my students to write?!"
The units will be sequential and progressively get harder throughout the school year as students' skills develop.

UNIT 4 - EXPOSITORY "HOW TO" WRITING
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This unit teaches students to write "how-to" expository pieces.
In Unit 3 Narrative Writing, students learned about using sequencing/transition words. Students continue to use these words (first, next, then, and finally) in this unit as well.
Students must explain "how-to" complete tasks such as make slime, pancakes, a sandwich, find a lost treasure, ride a bike, take care of a pet, etc.
They are not writing about themselves in this unit, rather they are practicing giving directions on how to complete a task.
The activities and printables included in this unit provide students with the scaffolding they need to be successful, confident writers. Plus, all the planning is done for you!

WHAT IS INCLUDED
-------------------------------
★ Posters
Both 8.5x11 and 16x20 formats are included. These are great charts to show students aspects of expository writing. I give examples on how I use these along with an opening activity in the directions.
★ Cut & Paste Activities w/ Color Answer Charts
These activities are an excellent way to have students practice giving directions on “how to” complete a task. I start the unit with these activities so students can see how to put events/directions in order.
★ Color Cards with Sequencing Words
These coordinate with the cut/paste activities and can be used in a variety of ways (see preview for photos.)
★ "How To" Expository Prompts
Adorable chart that takes the guess work out of, "What should I write about?" Students can choose from a variety of prompts where they can explain how to complete a task.
Once they know how to use this chart, students can complete many expository writing prompts! This is a perfect activity for a Writing Center once students are trained on how to use it.
★ How-To Writing Paper
Four options included so you can provide scaffolding as needed.
★ How-To Mini Books
Five themes are included!
Each page has a sequencing word such as First, Next, Then, Finally. Students use the provided word banks to put the events in order and give directions on how to do something.
★Monthly Writing Crafts
8 adorable themes are included!
Students trace, color the mini pictures and paste the strips onto their craft (in the correct order.) Then, they can paint/color and add embellishments to their craft. These are adorable to hang on a bulletin board or hallway display. This provides excellent review throughout the year for students to practice their how-to writing.
