PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This 1-2 hour lesson uses Richard Brautigan's short story "I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone" to teach extended metaphor and figurative language to high school aged students. The story is available for free on the web, as well as video of a dramatic reading of the story on YouTube (links are included in the lesson plan). The story is very short, making this the perfect emergency sub plan, or just a good plan to have in your back pocket in case you suddenly have a spare hour.

Year after year my students really enjoy this lesson, and when they're finished with the writing assignment, they have a thoughtful story to share with a friend or family member, which is an added bonus.

If you enjoy this lesson, please take a moment to give it a rating. And if you have suggestions for improvement, or want to share your students' finished projects, I'd love to hear from you! (You can find my contact information in the lesson.)

For more common core aligned lesson plans, including the very popular series on Serial (the podcast), please check out the rest of my store.
