Are you frustrated with creating extra credit assignments that are rigorous enough for students, yet not taxing on you as the teacher? Well, I've got the resource for you. With this optional extra credit assignment , students memorize passages from one of the texts they may likely read over the course of the semester or that they may encounter over the course of their ELA classes. By providing students with three different levels at varying point values for each of the levels, students have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to recite texts to you the teacher. Students have to sign up to come and recite it in front of me before or after school. I deduct a certain number of points per error (i.e. skipping lines, missing words, or needing prompting). After a predetermined number of errors (3 or 5), the student CANNOT earn the extra credit. What I love about it is that it's all work on the part of the student and zero effort on my part. No mountain of essays to grade, arbitrary posters piled in your classroom, or having students inadvertently "pay" for extra credit (i.e. purchasing supplies for points). Enjoy!
