Flashcard Activity has been my students’ favorite writing prompt, regardless of how it’s been employed. The flashcards seem a fun throwback to “manipulatives." You can use it over and over again all year through.
Age and Grade Range
It is perfectly suitable for grades 6 and up. It can very easily be used even at the University level.
WHY this is a Value. . . About this Product
The genius of the Activity is in the diametrically opposed “affect” of the cards which by their extreme dissimilarity spark greater creativity and “out of the box” thinking. In short: what scenario can the writer think up that makes the oddly paired cards not only feasible, but downright realistic?
There are 84 words in all, but they can be paired more than 1500 different ways, ensuring a WHOLE lot of use, and a lot of creativity and interesting scenes and stories. The words have been chosen to nudge writers to take risks and experiment with:
• narrator types (the unreliable or naïve narrator),
• point of view (third omniscient or second for example)
• genre and sub-genre
• setting study – era, political situation, etc.
• plot and more.
Challenge writers to break out of traditional storylines that we all are guilty of getting “stuck” in, and to improve all general writing skills that are transferrable in the classroom.
