Extreme Weather: Home Edition is a STEAM based project! I have included the rubric to help facilitate grading!
Before you begin this project, I suggest that students read and watch videos about various extreme weather conditions.
For this project, students research house designs that can withstand a hurricane, flood, or a tornado. They then brainstorm their own design, sketch it, and build it! In order to integrate Math, the students have to determine the projected and actual cost of their house by determining what provided or brought materials they need to use.
My students' favorite part was actually testing the houses! I provided a limitation on the width and length of the house because I put their houses in a plastic container to simulate a flood. I put two floor fans around the house and sprayed it with water to simulate a hurricane. In order to simulate a tornado, I put 4 fans around the hose.
This was one of my favorite projects to do with my 3rd graders and it was one of their favorites too!
