NEEDS NO SUPPLIES!
Fun - kids get a kick out of staring at each other's eyes! Great during a Human Body Systems unit, as well.
Students are lead through each step of the Scientific Method step by step. They are given the problem "How does light affect the pupils of your eyes?", a little bit of background information, and then are asked to generate a hypothesis. From there, they are instructed to think of their own experiment! They must outline their procedure, independent variable, dependent variable, and the controls they would put in place. Then, they are instructed to DO IT. They perform the simple test they designed, collect data, and report the results in a conclusion section. There are a few simple follow-up questions, too.
Kids love this little activity, and it gives them a chance to practice the Scientific Method without the teacher having to buy anything! This could even be done as a homework assignment, but it's much more fun to have pairs do it in class.
