These activities are ready to copy and go, without need for the sub to read lengthy directions. Explanations for students and for the sub are incorporated as scripts which headline some but not all worksheets. The only equipment your sub needs is a copy machine, smartboard or activeboard; the only supplies your kids need are pencils, crayons, scissors, and glue.
Morning and afternoon large group “messages” for students to complete and for the sub teacher to use as “get acquainted” and “end of day wrap up” meetings. Each message should take from 30 to 45 minutes of class time.
Fiction and Non-fiction Reader Response papers for students to write after they have read independently for 30 (or more) minutes. Students will record what they learned about plot, characters, setting, and new words, whether they read a chapter of the book or the entire book. Non-fiction readers will record facts and new words learned. These reader response forms provide the opportunity for small group or large group sharing upon completion.
Science, reading, and writing are combined in a study of ears and eyes, hearing loss and vision loss. Students will complete diagrams on parts of the ear and the eye. They will read about deafness and using sign language. They will read about blindness and using braille. They will practice sign language and braille. They will put 8 new vocabulary words (sign language, deaf, blind, communicate, braille, fingerspell, frequency, sensory in ABC order, find dictionary definitions, and write their own sentences using these words.
In math they will create their own “World’s largest” multiplication, subtraction, addition, and division problems and challenge one another to find the answers.
