This lesson includes a link to the Fitzgerald biography entitled The Great American Dreamer, questions for students to answer while watching the video, and an answer key.
Fitzgerald lived a fascinating life, and I love using this video lesson as an introduction to The Great Gatsby. By studying Fitzgerald first, students are able to identify situations in the novel that mirror his own tragic life. For example, I think it’s very interesting that Fitzgerald himself wanted to be a football player in college, but was rejected. He later made the villainous and despicable Tom Buchanan a former college football star. Coincidence? Hardly.
This could also be a quick and easy, yet relevant, sub plan.
Thanks for your interest, and I hope you enjoy using this lesson with your students.
