The fifth grade OA unit contains handouts, study sheets, and tests for OA 1 and 2 (order of operations and expressions) and OA3 (patterns). There are three handouts to practice order of operations and one to practice expressions. There is a study sheet and test for OA1/OA2 and one for OA3. Each study sheet and test has rigor, an extended response, and a spiral review-all that are needed for your state assessment. The unit also includes answer keys for each document.
Assessments include higher order questions (matching, fill in the blank, true/false, short answer), written responses, and use of skills to explain and/or justify student answers.
I give the study sheet a few days before the unit test. This gives students time to complete it as part of classwork or homework. Then, we go over the study guide to make sure all students understand how to complete each question. The unit test is similar to the study guide but with different numbers in the questions.
On the spiral review, I’ve included skills most commonly missed on prior assessments. Including the spiral review in each assessment allows students to work toward mastery of skills they have not already grasped and to keep skills fresh in students’ minds.
This unit is an effective tool in assessing students’ abilities not only on OA standards but prior ones as well . Therefore, preparing them for GMAS and sixth grade.
There are 19 working pages (not counting answer keys) in this unit. There are two sections to the unit. Both sections (separated by the standard) include a study sheet and an assessment; one section also includes additional practice handouts. Each study guide and test is 4 pages long. Each has questions about the standard(s) being tested, a spiral review, and an extended constructed response where the students have to not only answer but also justify their responses with pictures and/or words.
Answer keys are provided for the entire unit.
