The fifth grade measurement unit contains study sheets and tests for MD 1 (measurement conversions),
MD 2 (line plots), and MD 3, 4, and 5 (volume). Each study sheet and test has rigor, an extended response, and a spiral review-all that are needed for your state assessment. The unit also includes answer keys for each document.
Assessments include higher order questions (multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer), written responses, drawing of models, and use of algorithms to explain and/or justify student answers.
I give the study sheet a few days before the unit test. This gives students time to complete it as part of classwork or homework. Then, we go over the study guide to make sure all students understand how to complete each question. The unit test is similar to the study guide but with different numbers in the questions.
On the spiral review, I’ve included skills most commonly missed on prior assessments. Including the spiral review in each assessment allows students to work toward mastery of skills they have not already grasped and to keep skills fresh in students’ minds.
Providing this comprehensive study guide and test for each standard requires the students to practice all of the standards on a regular basis which ultimately leads to a higher rate of mastery and a more effective course of study.
There are 20 working pages in this unit. There are three sections to the unit. Each section (separated by the standard) includes a study sheet and an assessment. Each study guide and test is 3 or 4 pages long. Each has questions about the standard being tested, a spiral review, and an extended constructed response where the students have to not only answer but justify with pictures and/or words their responses.
Answer keys are provided for the entire unit.
