The fifth grade NBT 1 and NBT 2 unit contains a reference guide, charts, handouts, study sheets, and tests for NBT 1 (place value) and NBT 2 (patterns in zeros). The reference guide is a great teaching tool while the charts and handouts provide practice and review. The study sheets and tests have rigor and a spiral review (skills concerning previously taught)-all that are needed for your state assessment. The unit also includes answer keys for each document.
Assessments include higher order questions through forms such as multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, sketching, and written responses.
I give the study sheet a few days before the unit test. This gives students time to complete it as part of classwork or homework. Then, we go over the study guide to make sure all students understand how to complete each question. The unit test is similar to the study guide but with different numbers in the questions.
For review, I’ve included skills taught in previous years. Including the spiral review in each assessment allows students to work toward mastery of skills they have not already grasped and to keep skills fresh in students’ minds. This comprehensive unit provides much, if not all, that is needed to effectively teach the NBT 1 and NBT 2 standards.
There are 15 working pages in this unit. There are 5 pages of practice handouts and a two page reference guide that is helpful to not only the parents, but teachers as well. There are two versions of the study sheet and test for these standards. These could be used as a pretest/posttest or for remediation. Each study guide is 2 pages long, as is each test. Each has questions about the standard being tested and questions concerning standards taught in previous years.
Answer keys are provided for the entire unit.
