This Place Value unit is actually excellent for not only fifth graders but also for acceleration of fourth graders and remediation of sixth. One study sheet and test contains questions such as finding the value, naming the place, writing words in all forms, and ordering numbers up to the hundred millions place. The other study sheet and test does the same but also includes questions involving decimals out to the ten thousandths.
I give the study sheet a few days before the unit test. This gives students time to complete it as part of classwork or homework. Then, we go over the study guide to make sure all students understand how to complete each question. The unit test is similar to the study guide but with different numbers in the questions.
This unit is an effective tool to use to review and assess students’ abilities in not only current place value standards but also prior taught standards as well. The rigor and repetition of this unit provides a great foundation on which to build all future skills.
There are 4 working pages in this unit. Each study guide and test is 2 pages long. One study sheet and test requires the students to use skills associated with only whole numbers out to the hundred millions place. The other study sheet and test requires students to use skills involving whole numbers out to the hundred millions and decimals out to the ten thousandths.
Answer keys are provided for the entire unit.
