The fifth grade NF 1 and NF 2 unit contains three comprehensive study sheets and three comprehensive tests for NF 1 and NF 2 (addition and subtraction of fractions). All of the study sheets and tests have rigor and a spiral review, and two of them also have an extended response-all which are needed for your state assessment. The unit also includes answer keys for each document.
Assessments include higher order questions (multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answer), written responses, drawing of models, and use of algorithms to explain and/or justify student answers.
I give the study sheet a few days before the unit test. This gives students time to complete it as part of classwork or homework. Then, we go over the study guide to make sure all students understand how to complete each question. The unit test is similar to the study guide but with different numbers in the questions.
On the spiral review, I’ve included skills most commonly missed on prior assessments. Including the spiral review in each assessment allows students to work toward mastery of skills they have not already grasped and to keep skills fresh in students’ minds. This comprehensive unit provides much that is needed to effectively assess the NF 1 and NF 2 standards.
There are 20 working pages in this unit. There are three versions of a comprehensive study sheet and three versions of a comprehensive test. Version 1’s study sheet and test are two pages each. It has questions about the standard being tested and a spiral review that contains questions previously taught. Version 2 and Version 3 have study sheets and tests that are each 4 pages long. They include questions about the standards being tested, a spiral review, and an extended constructed response where the students have to not only answer but also justify with pictures and/or words their responses.
Answer keys are provided for the entire unit.
