FINANCIAL LITERACY - The Money Trail - Part 9 - Financial Planning Tips for Teens - this part concludes the parts of The Money Trail on saving and investing. Financial Planning, “Tips & Tools for Teens” ties together previous parts learned on checking, saving, investing, spending, and budgeting. In this part, students will examine basic financial planning tips for teens that they should start to do now – open a checking and savings account, pay yourself first, establish an emergency fund, budget now, understand the value of money, avoid credit cards, know your credit score, pay taxes, and beware of identity theft. Examples of financial statements and worksheets are included, and activities with an answer key are included in this unit.

Many adults say, “If I could go back in time, I would do certain things differently. I would have saved more and spent less. I wish I had listened to financial advice and acted on it!” Should your students learn basic steps for financial planning now? Or should they wait until it’s important such as after college or when they are married? What does a financial planner do? Do you need to bring financial literacy to your students?

Then, Financial Literacy: The Money Trail Series is just what you are looking for! In each part of the series, students will develop a working knowledge of the financial decisions that they need to make now and in the future. The Financial Literacy Parts are reinforcement activities using current research stats that parallel the standards. They are not intended as stand-alone units rather they are interactive activities between the teacher and students. The Money Trail Series supports the National Standards for Financial Literacy in the following: Earning Income, Buying Goods and Services, Saving Money, Using Credit, Investing, Protecting and Insuring.
