This is a great activity to help build fluency!! This is a Placemat with phrases made up with words with the letter Ss and numbers on it. Students will identify the number of words they can read per minute! Students enjoy this activity!!
INSTRUCTIONS: Students will use a 1 minute timer and read thru the Placemat, when time is up, student will identify the number of words read in 1 minute!!
I recommend that teacher model this activity during whole group instruction, then call on different students to use this activity. Illustrate to your students by calling on 2 students a day to model to the whole class. Once you have modeled students will enjoy going to this Fluency Center!! Students will be motivated with this activity! I suggest that you run 3 or 4 copies of this Placemat and place at a center.
In my class, I met with parents and illustrated this activity so that they too can reinforce at home. They can use their phone as a timer or any other timer. This fluency activity will help develop their child's fluency rate. I recommend that you send a copy of this Placemat in student homework folders.
Students will record the number of words (WPM) read on the paper I have provided. Students will write their name and record the number of words they read the first time, then, when they read again they will go to their name and write the number of words in the second square and so on!
