A Font Sort is used to help students improve letter recognition, letter writing and letter sound knowledge.
Emergent readers need to have explicit and systematic instruction and practice working with words and letters. A Font Sort provides opportunities for working with letters in teacher directed, small group, and center activities.
Students are given examples of letters written in a variety of fonts and then they sort the letters. Students may sort two or more different letters (each written in a variety of fonts).
Both upper-case and lower-case letters are provided and may be used in the sort.
This packet contains all letters, A to Z, in both upper-case and lower-case ready for printing. Each letter is on a separate page for ease of printing and organizing. Each letter comes in 10 different fonts. These letter cards are created on a business card size template and are provided in both a vertical (3.5 x 2) and a horizontal (2x3.5) format.
The cards may be printed on regular copy paper, cardstock, business card paper, or even magnetic business card sheets.
After modeling the sort with a group of children, teachers may place the materials in a literacy work station where children can work independently.
If you are making alphabet books, these letters may be printed and glued onto pages.
I hope you and your students will enjoy sorting with these Font Sort cards and activities.
