These science vocabulary charts are aligned to the 5th Grade FOSS unit "Mixtures and Solutions." They can be used independently of FOSS, as the vocabulary aligns with the 5th Grade Next Generation Science Standards.
They cover all the vocabulary from the five investigations in the unit:
1) Separating Mixtures
2) Developing Models
4) Reaching Saturation
5) Fizz Quiz
I use these charts as a form of self-assessment for my students. They glue them into their interactive science notebooks at the beginning of each FOSS investigation. I use “right-hand, left-hand” notebooks, so these are the first left-hand pages of each investigation, and the investigation title page is the right-hand page. I have included the editable PowerPoints that I use to display directions for the students for completing the vocabulary charts and the title page.
Throughout the unit, I ask them to return to the chart and self-assess again. By the end of the unit, they make a final assessment, and color in the box of the term based on their final understanding. Green = “I can explain it.” Blue = “I know it!” Yellow = “Sounds familiar.” Red = “I’ve never heard of it.” (Which is hopefully not the case!) They know to go back and study any red or yellow words before the test.
