Friendship in O. Henry's "After 20 Years"
This printable handout walks students through the story "After 20 Years" by O. Henry and gets them to think about the theme of friendship.
Students begin by defining what they believe a "true friend" is. After reading the first half of the story, they create a social network profile for the main character.
After then reading the last half of the story, they grapple with questions about the real meaning of true friendship.
The printable includes the questions and guide *as well as the story itself*. I have edited some of the anachronistic or distracting language.
The Lottery Ticket: An Active Reading Guide

The packet also includes a news story about lottery winners finding tragedy instead of happiness with their new-found wealth. A follow-up question urges students to consider the real-life implications of the short story.
