Thank you for your interest in this product!
Literacy in Mathematics is an essential skill. Math Literacy is not only the ability to use numbers to help solve real-world problems, but it is also the ability to understand the “language” of Math.
Students need to not only perform computations, they also need to understand WHY they are performing the steps and be able to communicate this understanding with others.
This resource was created to broaden the understanding of Math language. It requires students to understand the vocabulary terms associated with a unit of study, as well as to explain WHY the vocabulary word is relevant to a particular Mathematical situation. This product would be ideal as a Math center when a new unit is introduced, and it compliments the use of word walls.
This activity includes 6 Mathematical situations for students to read in small groups. Then, the students must decide which of the vocabulary terms are associated with the situation, and finally explain their choices on a recording sheet. Each situation card requires the use of multiple vocabulary words.
For example, after reading a situation card, a student decides that the term “Simplify” best describes the given situation. He/she must then explain why the word “simplify” describes the situation.
This download includes:
- 6 Mathematical situation cards related to Fractions (a number in the bottom left corner indicates the number of associated vocabulary words)
- 9 vocabulary cards associated with Fractions
- Instruction Sheet for use in a Math Center
- Student recording sheet
- Answer Key
This resource would be the perfect accompaniment to my Fractions Word Wall set:
